Awesome project - beautifully put together! I think it
would be great to use for mini-lessons in the writing block.

Fabulous project!!! The student poems are very creative, and the format of the page
(including the book title for each) is beautiful and the music soothing. Giving the
list of winter books and poetry resources is so helpful for fellow teachers. Thanks
for sharing! Your students are truly blessed.

Thank you so much for this page, Marci! It's an inspiration. I'm
going to print out some of the poems and share them with the teachers at school. It snowed
here Thursday, and that is something that doesn't happen very often in Southern AZ. (I can
count on one hand the number of times it's snowed in the past 15 years!) I'm sure the
teachers can use the experience and the poetry samples for some great poetry writing
lessons.

... what a
fantastic project. The students poems were wonderful and I
love the idea of using literature as a springboard to the poetry. I
especially love the 5 senses poem "Manatee Winter", but they were all great.
I'm sure our students will be inspired to try their own hand at poems after
reading these!

What a wonderful collection of poetry, first graders! I loved reading all
the different types of poems you read and will share them with my second
graders. We may even try writing some of our own poetry on different topics
using some of the formats which Mrs. McGowan suggested and you have used so wonderfully.
I am glad you have fun reading great books and writing poetry with your teachers
and classmates.

What a wonderful project! In addition to providing students with a meaningful learning
experience, "Read a Book- Write a Poem" offers educators excellent ideas on how
to enhance their literacy program. Congratulations!

Award ~
Feb. 11:
I am writing to let you know that the members of the RTEACHER listserv
(mailing list) have awarded you "The Miss Rumphius Award." RTEACHER is
a discussion group for literacy and technology
(http://www.reading.org/publications/rt/rt_listserv.html) run in
conjunction with The Reading Teacher, a journal of the International
Reading Association. We present this award for your wonderful resource
located at: http://www.mrsmcgowan.com/winterpoems/index.html
Members of the RTEACHER mailing list (listserv) present the MISS
RUMPHIUS AWARD to educators who develop and share exceptional Internet
resources for literacy and learning. It honors teachers who make our
world a more beautiful place, like the title character in the book Miss
Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. Because Miss Rumphius scattered lupine seeds
wherever she went, we use this flower as the symbol for our award.
If you wish to learn more about this award, the web page is located at:

Dear Mrs. Wiblin's Class,
Hello from Mrs. Lubin's first grade class. We read your poem and we really liked
it. It was funny. We also read The Hat by Jan Brett. We had a special hat day in library
class. Some of us wore princess hats, police hats, Long Island Duck baseball hats, Yankee
hats, Lion King hats, hockey hats and Batman hats. Our favorite part of this story was
when the animals were wearing all the different clothes.
Thank you again for writing such a nice poem. We hope you can write back to us soon.

Dear Mrs. Ponton and class,
We read your poem and we really liked it. It was similiar to the book that we
read, called, Snow Inside the House. Some of the things that we like to do in the snow
outside are throwing snowballs, making
snowpeople, going sleigh riding and going snowboarding. Some of the things that we like to
do inside when it snows are drink hot chocolate with marshmallows in it, sit by the fire
or heater, lay in your bed with the covers over you, and cuddle up with your family.
We really loved your poem and hope you have a warm winter. Happy Valentine's Day!
Love,
Mrs. Pierce's Class

To Mrs. McGowan's Class,
We just read your poem. We really liked it a lot. Our favorite part was when you
wrote that the animals have full tummies. We like all kinds of animals in our class. Some
of them are goats, bunnies, wolves, foxes and bats. We also like when our tummies are
full. We like to eat lobster, pizza, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, spaghetti, and chicken.
Thank you for writing such a nice, fun poem.

Dear Ms. Patti's Class,
Hello from Mrs. Bruno's Class. We just read your poem. It was great. Our favorite
part was about making snowballs. We love to throw them too. It is supposed to snow here in
New York tomorrow. We hope to make snowballs, make an igloo, build a snowman and make snow
angels. We took a vote in our class and 16 people think it is going to snow. Danny
voted no snow.

Hi Marci!
I can not thank you enough for hosting this winter book/poem project. I am a

Hi Marci,
Thanks for letting us be a part of this project. It has been fun! I appreciate the time
and energy you have used to put it all together! My kids have really enjoyed reading the
poems. We wrote a response letter in class for Ms. Bruno's class. I also just created my
first classroom webpage by taking a class through Connected University. The address link
is Classroom Page 1.
Thanks, Lynn Patti
Dear
Mrs. Bruno's Class,
Thank you for the letter you sent in! It was exciting to see a letter written to us. We
really liked your Purple Penguin Poem! Most people in our classroom have never even made
snowballs. We live in Florida!
Thank you,
Ms. Patti's Class
