Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636. It is not a town; it was incorporated as a city in 1832. In fact, it is the capital city of Rhode Island, a New England State. Providence is about 50 miles from Boston and about 175 miles from New York. We have a mayor and a fifteen-member city council. Providence’s area consists of both land and water. It contains 18.47 square miles of land area and 2.06 square miles of water area. There are 26,904 students with 2,169 teachers in 45 Providence Public Schools. The population of the City of Providence as of April 1, 2000, was 173,618. (That is more people than called Providence home than in 1990.)
