We used Margaret Wise Brown's The Important Book as an inspiration
for this integrated Social Studies & Language Arts project. The children did
research about our town by using the web sites listed above and talking to their parents.
Each child wrote his or her own poem and then illustrated it. The poetry and illustrations
were displayed on a bulletin board in the hallway outside our classroom.

This is a class poem the children wrote collaboratively
using parts of their own poems.
~ Newtown, PA ~
The important thing about Newtown is
friendly people live here.
It is a safe community.
It does not have pollution.
It is not a big city.
You can fish and hike at beautiful Tyler State Park.
It has brave policemen and firemen.
The schools are great!
It has a small movie theater.
It has a bookstore.
But the important thing about Newtown
is friendly people live here.
