~   My Town Is Important 2003-2004 ~

Mrs. Nancy Ruvo's 3rd Grade
Helen Morgan School
Sparta, New Jersey

Sparta is a town in northwest New Jersey with about 18,000 people. It is built around Lake Mohawk, which is very pretty. This area was mostly dairy farms until about 30 years ago, but it is now becoming filled with people who commute to work in the metropolitan area.

We used the "Important" format for our class poem about Sparta.

~ SPARTA ~

The important thing about Sparta
is that it is our home.

It has caring, friendly, people.

It is beautiful, with hills, trees, and streams.
(The Wallkill River flows NORTH from here!)

It has lots of spots for fun, like sports fields,
parks, and lakes.

There are good places to eat (yum!)
and nice places to shop.

But the important thing about Sparta
is that it is our home.

Other activities in our study of Sparta and other communities included constructing a town map, a walking tour of our town, and making a guide to Sparta using photos of various spots in our community.

In addition, we compared Sparta to other communities by implementing the "Flat Stanley" project, wherein each child receives information about the community/town his "flat person" visits.

We hope to learn even more about other communities by frequent visits to this web site. We're hoping to see our town and poem join the others here!
