That's What Happens When It's Spring!

Lorie Marchant's First Grade
Show Low Primary School
Show Low, Arizona

Books we read:

Hamilton Duck's Springtime Story by Arthur Getz
Clifford's Spring Clean-Up by Norman Bridwell
and numerous books by Beatrix Potter

We had just finished participating in Project Groundhog online, which had involved learning about the weather in our community.  We discussed how you can tell when spring has arrived and looked at the recent weather data we had collected.  Then we brainstormed what spring looks like, sounds like, feels like and smells like in our community.  The children made a word web of these ideas.   Then the children wrote reports about springtime in Show Low and illustrated them using Kid Pix and regular crayon drawings. A few days later we also wrote poems about what spring is.

Here is one child's report about spring in Show Low:

I like to skateboard and play in the Springtime.  I like baseball.  I see bees in the grass.  Mice see dogs.  I feel warm.   Birds are in the snow.  That's what happens when it's spring!

Here is one child's poem about spring:

Spring is fun
Spring is nice
Spring is the best
But most of all spring is cool!
