A Patchwork of Places and Poetry

During our Communities study, our class read Franklin's Neighborhood. In this book, Franklin's school assignment was to think of his favorite place in his neighborhood. This encouraged us to think about all of the special places in our neighborhood - and boy, were there a lot! We see why Franklin had such a hard time choosing his favorite place.

After brainstorming a list of special places, we read The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco. We used these two books as the main focus for our classroom quilt construction. Each student wrote an Important Poem (based on the book by Margaret Wise Brown) about one special place in our neighborhood and we combined these together to create our special quilt.

The Important Thing About A Bank ...

The important thing about a bank is that's where you get money.

You can put your credit card in the machine.  You could go inside.  Sometimes the line is long.  You give your credit card to the lady.

But the most important thing about a bank is you get money there.

The Important Thing About A Library ...

The important thing about a library is you can read books.

You can look at books.  You can take them home.  They have books on almost everything.

But the most important thing about the library is you can read books.

The Important Thing About A Dentist ...

The most important thing about a dentist is they keep our teeth clean.

They give you prizes when you are finished.  You can go there to get braces.  You can go there to get a tooth pulled.  They put yucky stuff in your mouth.  They let you get water from a pipe.

But the most important thing about a dentist is that they keep your teeth clean.
