Patchwork
of Places and Poetry |
After reading Dumpling Soup our class discussed the uniqueness of Hawaii and its multi cultural society. This concept was reinforced again as we read Luka's Quilt and interviewed our grandparents about their lives. We then began to focus on the physical beauty of the islands. Our quilt is a blend of physical and cultural aspects that make up our island home. Our quilt reflects this in picturing the volcanoes that formed our islands, the shave ice that quenches our thirst on a warm, sunny day and the lei of flowers we give to show our affection and love.
The children have come away with an understanding of quilts as a means of preserving the past and creating a keepsake of memories to treasure and share. Book List: |
