Winter Writing 2004
We contributed this work to our winter collaborative literacy project,
Read A Winter Book ... Write A Winter Poem 2004.
Please visit the project pages and read poems from many classes
in the USA and Canada.

We read many winter books this year.  Two favorites were Cross-Country Cat by Mary Calhoun and The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen.

My students loved Henry, the resourceful Siamese, as he skied toward his home and family.  We used the mitten tree idea to display 5-line character poems, connecting these two wonderful stories.  In addition, the whole class wrote an acrostic poem to retell Henry's story as a cross-country skiing cat.

CROSS-COUNTRY CAT:
Our Acrostic Story Retelling

skis.jpg (2526 bytes)

Cool, clever Henry the cat
Runs after flies and mice
Outside the cabin, there's snow
Skis made for him by the Kid
Siamese sinks in the snow; not a skier

Can't leave without his purple mouse
Only one left behind is Henry
Unhappy, upset, and nervous
Needs those skis
Ties provisions to his own tail
Rides skis by the elk and races the rabbit
Yells at the bluejay and escapes from a coyote

Car and family come back for Henry
Acts like he needs help
They take him home. That's one smart cat!
