Mouse Tales

Mrs. McGowan's First Grade
Spring Lake, NJ

February 2006

Our first graders recently listened to a story called Miss Renee's Mice by Elizabeth Stokes Hoffman.  We also enjoyed several other mouse stories but the mice in Miss Renee's dollhouse were favorites.

Miss Renee builds dollhouses and miniatures.  When a big group of barn mice take over a dollhouse, they disrupt her peace and quiet!  She tries to solves her noisy problem by building a tiny ship for the mice and sends them on a vacation.  After a while she misses her little friends.  You'll have to read the story to see how it ends!

Using a computer program that was new to our classroom, Scholastic Keys, we wrote about our mice going on a trip.  This project fit in nicely with our social studies transportation theme.  Most students chose a warm, sunny spot for swimming and surfing, but one mouse went to the Olympics and won a medal for snowboarding! Another mouse traveled to Mars.  Here is a sample of our class work:

You can find out where some of our other mice went by visiting our project page at Susan Silverman's Mouse Tales collaborative project.  Several other classes are participating so check out their class work too!

Our students also dressed a mouse in clothing appropriate for their vacation spots.  These are traditional crayon - colored efforts.  Please be patient while the pictures load.  Just click on the smaller image to see larger version.  Eventually all the students' work will be posted.  Enjoy!
