~ FALL Poetry Project ~

(Webpage originally published on Family Education's myschoolonline)

This project closed in November 2000.  Samples of student work remain available as resources.

It was an honor to receive The Miss Rumphius Award from the members of RTEACHER mailing list (listserv) which runs in conjunction with The Reading Teacher, a journal of the International Reading Association. Thank you!

Welcome autumn, our most colorful season with your "brilliant pink, red, and orange"! It's a great time to appreciate nature and talk about the many changes taking place around us ... the weather, hours of daylight, animal behaviors, color of leaves, and the harvest of fruits and vegetables. We're celebrating the season by writing acrostic poems. This format is a good choice for "new poets".

I'm delighted to publish these terrific examples of class poetry writing. To find a specific poem, click on your grade level. Multilevel classes are listed by the highest grade. Enjoy!

We finished our poem today. It was quite an experience! We chose one of two topics to write about, then when we finished we weren't sure we liked it. So then we wrote about the second topic, and were quite pleased with how it turned out. What a great time going through the writing process together!

It's a new season! Yes, it's fall and it's .... spring! Students in South Africa were happy to see colder winter days leave as spring arrived in September. Sixth graders from Sterling Primary School join in celebrating the change of season with poetry about spring and autumn.

Mary Kreul, from Whitefish Bay, WI., sent an update telling how her 2nd grade students each wrote a poem and illustrated them using KidPix Deluxe.

We traced our hands in lots of fall colors to make piles of leaves to play in... then glued tumbling leaves on paper to display with our poems.  Thanks for the chance to be part of this!

Grade 2 - 3: Fall Poems

Mrs. Singer's 2nd Grade
Terryville Road School
Port Jefferson Station, New York

Squirrels run all around in Long Island, New York
Quietly they sneak around in the trees and gather acorns
Usually squirrels make their homes in tall trees
I n the winter squirrels hibernate
Really they can walk on wires like an trapeze artist in the circus
Rabbits run the other way when they see a squirrel come by
Each squirrel has fun with their family
Look up in the trees and you might see a squirrel.
