Autumn Across Spring Lake, NJ
Our fall writing was inspired by Elaine Good's
Fall Is Here! I Love It! and Lois Ehlert's Leaf Man.
Spring Lake is located in central New Jersey, right on the
Atlantic coast. We have traditional fall weather and
colors, with leaves falling or flying all around just like it's
depicted in these stories.
Students wrote about fall as they
know it by using a five senses format. Here's
an example of a five senses poem:

Fall
by
Bridget
I see
big pumpkins,
hear crunchy
leaves,
taste chocolate
ice cream, and
smell turkey
gravy.
Leaves feel
crunchy.
I am happy
because

After
hearing Lois Ehlert's Leaf Man read to the
class, the students pretended that the Leaf Man was drifting
over Spring Lake. Everyone was looking for him!
The Leaf Man may have heard about our town ...

The important thing
about
Spring Lake, New
Jersey is that nice people live
here. Our town also has good parks, playgrounds,
hotels, restaurants, and shops. The ocean and beach,
schools and teachers are great. There are beautiful
houses and streets and brave fire fighters and
policemen. But the most important thing about Spring
Lake is that nice people live here.

Leaf Man, Leaf Man Who Do You See?

This year's first graders spotted the Leaf Man in many
places! They wrote a describing sentence about each place
too.
Lois Ehlert has a terrific website with activities about Leaf
Man. We used the pictures from her
sticker page on our
illustrations.

We also collected leaves and made our
own leaf pictures. Michalena's is at the top of the page and here are a few others:
