11/10:  I just wanted to let you know again how much my students and I enjoyed working on "Oh, the Places We'll Go" this fall. It was a wonderful way to kickoff a poetry writing unit as well as a natural connection between language arts, social studies, and technology.

11/06:  Congratulations!
I am writing to let you know that the members of the RTEACHER listserv (mailing list) have awarded you "The Miss Rumphius Award."  RTEACHER is a discussion group for literacy and technology (http://www.reading.org/publications/rt/rt_listserv.html) run in conjunction with The Reading Teacher, a journal of the International Reading Association.  We present this award for your wonderful example of a classroom home page  located at: http://www.mrsmcgowan.com/places.htm
Members of the RTEACHER mailing list (listserv) present the MISS

RUMPHIUS AWARD to educators who develop and share exceptional Internet
resources for literacy and learning.  It honors teachers who make our
world a more beautiful place, like the title character in the book Miss
Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. Because Miss Rumphius scattered lupine seeds
wherever she went, we use this flower as the symbol for our award.
If you wish to learn more about this award, the web page is located at:

Best wishes for continued success in the important work you contribute
to our instructional worlds!

11/04:  I just wanted to thank you for a great way to start the new year in such an interesting fashion. The children have had a great time reading about all the different places and finding them on a map and in an atlas. Everyone did a fabulous job! We've chosen a couple of different classes to email, and we've been using the poem patterns to write other poems. Thanks so much for organizing the project!

Debbie Rastin, London, ON

11/04:  Thanks so much... our page looks terrific!  The children really enjoyed seeing their work.  Thanks for making it so easy for those of us who are just beginning to dabble with internet projects.

Kathy Rainer, Kent, Ohio

Wow! I rarely post anything on this board but I am so impressed with what you have done!  Wish I could have been a part of it.  It's excellent!!!!   Will you be doing more of this type of project?  If so, I'd love to get on your participation list.   Mary Jo

11/04: Hi Folks,
I would like to be the first person to nominate "Oh, The Places We'll Go" for a Miss Rumphius Award. This delightful site provides educators throughout the global community with an excellent model of language arts and social studies ideas.  Congratulations to Marci and the project participants!

10/27:  There just aren't enough hours in the day to complete all of the ideas that springboard from projects like these. Thank You!!

Nancy Hagerty, Bartlett Elementary, South Lyon, MI

10/27:  This project was terrific! Thank you for organizing it for all of us. I appreciated all of the suggestions and great links that you provided. It fit right in with the study of our own community in social studies. The children enjoyed learning how to write acrostic poems and the results were amazing for seven and eight year olds. Again, thank you for taking the time to put this project together and for doing such a wonderful job of displaying everyone's work. Each page is a work of art. I hope you consider hosting another project next year. I will be first in line to sign up!

Sincerely,
Debbie Coats, Clay Lamberton Elem. School, Berlin, Wisconsin

10/21:  Thank you so much. It looks great, and I already have a response from someone to share with my class. We are enjoying finding the locations on our maps.

10/20:  Thanks so much for another wonderful project!  You seem to have the ability to create ones that capture the imaginations of both students and teachers alike!  We LOVED writing acrostics - so much so that we're thinking of creating our own book at school. It's also been very fun to read about all the other places from near and far.   Everyone has been doing such a super job!  Thanks, again, for a job very well done,

Ms. Jacoby and class, Peirce School, Arlington, MA

10/20:  Just wanted to thank you for putting together a great project. Each time I do an internet project with a class I rediscover the importance of working together. The children are always so enthusiastic whenever classes and schools are working together. My students really have enjoyed working together on our page and seeing what other classes have done. They have learned so much more than I would have thought of teaching.  Thank you!!

Pat Schmidt, Corpus Cristi School, Willingboro, NJ

7/30/01       Thank you for running such a great year starter. I would like to make a few suggestions to enhance the project.
If we could get everyone's Latitude and Longitude then my class can plot the locations on that world map image. A bonus would be to have the Latitude and Longitude of their special places as well. The plots can even be links to the participants.
How about another idea for our participants. We do a scavenger hunt among the participants submissions. Each site could send in a clue and with some part of their project they can place a piece of a puzzle. Then a visitor can go around and collect the pieces and put them together to make the puzzle. The puzzle could have something to do with working together around the world, sharing, community or the like?

Dave Wilson Gr. 5   Simcoe, Ontario, Canada

~ Ed. Note: You can get Longitude/latitude at
