Oh, The Places We'll Go!
Debbie Coats
Gr. 2  Clay Lamberton Elementary School
Berlin, Wisconsin

From Ms. Coats:  "I read The Important Book, by Margaret Wise Brown and then the students wrote the important things about their own city. As a class, they decided that they liked Austin's idea of a peaceful little city as being the most important thing about Berlin. We chose the other sentences from a list of ideas that had been brainstormed.

Next the students learned how to write acrostic poetry. They wrote poems about fall first. Then they each wrote an acrostic poem about Berlin. Students also drew pictures of their city. This project integrated reading, writing and social studies standards."

BERLIN, WISCONSIN

The most important thing about Berlin is that it is a peaceful little city. It is true that the Fox River runs right through it. There are lots of farms and woods here. People go hunting, fishing, swimming and camping in the summer. Snowmobiling, ice fishing and ice skating are things to do in the winter. Berlin has beautiful parks, great schools and lots of places to shop. But the most important thing about Berlin is that it is a peaceful little city.

BERLIN

Better than any city
Everybody enjoys the seasons
River goes through the city
Library in town
I love it here!
Neighbors are nice.

BERLIN

Beware of bees in the summer
Eat at McDonald's
River runs slowly sometimes
Leaves fall lightly in fall.
I think it is a peaceful city.
Now wouldn't you want to live here?

BERLIN

Boys play baseball.
Eagles flying in the sky
Rabbits hopping everywhere
Lakes are frozen
I eat ice cream.
Neighbors are nice.
