Our first grade class wrote sensory poems about the ocean this year.  They considered how the ocean smells, looks, sounds, tastes, and feels.

How We Did It ...

Our poems were planned using a 6 box graphic organizer.  We just folded paper into thirds and then in half.  A brainstormed word list was written on our chalkboard and shared by everyone. Each student wrote words that might be used in the poem.  The next day, a first draft was written and read to classmates.  The following day a conference was held with teacher/student to reread and make any changes.  Finally, the "finished" copy was written.
