A Bit of History

View our First Grade Primary students' Power Point Research about the history of their hometown. Upton students have researched the history of their school, town, and exciting news events from the past 100 years.  After they posted their findings on the web page, the Upton Family of Alabama and Georgia found our web site and traveled to Upton, Kentucky. When they arrived, the students had a surprise reunion prepared for them.

To learn more about what our town looks like today, play the matching game Mrs. Seymour's Class constructed by clicking on Upton Today.  Mrs. Doty's 3-d map shows what our downtown looks like.

Western Elementary School is about 4 miles from the small village of Eastview.

Mrs. Branham's Kindergarteners made a Powerpoint about their hometown.

They learned that their hometown was named for the beautiful view to the east when the railroad came through in the 1870s. They drew pictures of some of the businesses there, including a bank, general stores, mill, stockyard, railroad depot, and sumac factory. They had fun holding a shadow pie supper and a box social where the boys bid pennies on boxes of cookies the girls fixed. They also demonstrated an Apron party where the boys hemmed the girls aprons and a "Tacky"party where everyone dressed up in things from the attic and cellar. They learned about these activities from their research of articles in the News-Enterprise one-hundred years ago  files. We found more information about the one room schools that were consolidated into Western in 1953 than we did about the town, whose businesses have mostly died out and been moved near an intersection with gas stations and mini-marts.
