TELLING TIME
Here are some terrific games to practice telling time.  Start with an easy one:  What Time Is it?  Once you're warmed up, try these:

Compare Numbers: Tell Time With Willie the Watchdog

Stop the Clock to Hour and Half Hour

Stop the Clock to 15 Minutes

Stop the Clock to 5 Minutes

CHALLENGE GAME!
Read the Time and Stop the Clock

Lots More Ideas About Fact Families

This is from Marcia Goudie:
I have a plastic jar (peanut butter sized) with special lid that opens easily. Once a week I send it home with a different student. They return it on Monday filled with any kind of item (non-perishable). Some suggestions are: dry noodles, beans, pennies, stones legos....anything that will fit inside. They must count the items before they bring the jar back and give me the amount on a little paper. The jar is left on a "math" table. When students have free time they can go, look at the jar, and make an estimation of the amount in the jar. On Friday we open the jar and compare the amount with the list. The one closest to the right amount gets to take the jar home....

These ideas are shared by Marci McGowan:

  • Give a 100 grid and have students subtract a certain number from 100.   They color in the differences and then have to explain the pattern that's created when chart is finished.
  • Students make up their own word problems for others to solve using classmate or book character names.
  • Teacher writes, on paper or chalkboard,  problems with missing addends for students to solve:
  • ___ + ____  + _____  =  15

    or  ____  +  _____  - _____ = 12

    or    9  =  9
They would have to write something like
    10 - 4 + 3 = 14 + 4 - 9
This computation all relates to algebra and the kids love it.

  • Another favorite is making the same value with different coins.  We do this as a whole class every day orally and write a few on the board.  I  attached magnets to back of coins and students can make the amount using the magnetic coins or write on paper chart.  Once that's done, they use the chart and write questions about the info (Which way used the fewest coins?  Which way will make your pocket the heaviest?)

  • Patterns with the calendar.  These I do with interested kids in small group.  Things like "If today is Tuesday the 4th what date will it be on Wed.  two weeks from now?"
    So it's 4 + 7 + 7 + 1 = 19  or 4 + 8 + 7 = 19
Students have to know patterns of plus 7 and plus 8 on the calendar.
