We participated in Debbie Thompson's Jelly Beans 2002 Internet Project with over 100 other classes.  Our task was to find out which color is found the most in a bag of jelly beans.

Our class used 3 bags of Jolly Rancher candies, with 4 students sharing one bag.  These are the results that were sent to Debbie's project page:

Bags

Color found the most

Number of jelly beans
Bag 1 pink 55
Bag 2 pink 52
Bag 3 orange 38

Here's How We Did It ...

To see a printable version of the recording page and other graphs we used, click on the pdf files listed below.  You'll need Acrobat Reader. You can can get a free download.

Each child was given a container of candies (scooped from the bag), 6 empty containers for sorting colors, and a recording page.

After the sorting was completed (jelly beans could now be eaten), each student entered his information onto a bar graph.  We did this on a different day.  Click on the pdf file link for a printable version of this bar graph:

The children were very excited to combine their information and see which color "won" for their bags.  Four students came to me at a time and dictated their amounts which were written on the chalkboard.  Together we added up the amounts for each color.  Then they used this "bag" information to make their final graph -  a vertical bar graph this time.

We are learning how to ask questions about information collected in a graph.   Students were required to write two questions about their bag data.

Some of these questions are listed below.  Let's see how well you can "read" a graph!
