Games: Then & Now

Second grade students interviewed their grandparents to see if they played similar or different games when they were the same age.  Their favorites were Hide and Seek, Hopscotch, Jumprope, Tag, and Kick-the-Can.  Children today liked Capture the flag, Hopscotch, and Manhunt.   Students collected their data by conducting a classroom poll and recorded with tally marks.

Candy Heart Colors

9bar_graph.jpg (21840 bytes)Around Valentine's Day, we emptied small boxes of  heart candies and estimated the number of each color in a box, sorted them by color, counted the colors, recorded with tally marks, added the totals for each color, made bar graphs, pie graphs, charts in Excel, and ate some of the candy too!  Click image to see Erin's Bar Graph in a larger version.  To print your own copy, click here:

Number of Candies Sorted by Color (doc file)

We made the pie charts almost by accident.  The class had been sorting their candies on large sheets of pink construction paper.  When someone arranged her candy groups in a circular pattern, Mrs. M. helped draw a circle around the ring and pie "slices" to the center.  The other students did the same.  They all used crayons to color in the candy shades and then cut out their pie charts. They liked being able to see the information another way.   Here's Erin's pie chart:

Weather Graphs

Microsoft Excel is easy to use in the classroom.   Cells in the spreadsheet are made larger for easier entry of data by students.

Lucky Charms Graphs

Kinds of Marshmallows

sarah_luckycharms.jpg (49424 bytes)

Here are the directions we wanted to follow:

* Get 1/2 cup Lucky Charms
* Estimate the number of each kind of marshmallow
* Sort the cereal from the marshmallows
* Eat the cereal while you work
* Group the marshmallows, count, record under icons
* Check your estimate and actual count
* Color in the boxes to make the graph

Oops!  We started to count before estimating - everyone was excited and anxious to begin.  So that step was not done this time.

Sarah moved her pieces into a circle and made another graph.

~ Resources for Making Graphs ~

The ABC's to Excel  Microsoft Excel does a nice job.   In addition to making graphs, Excel can be utilized for many other classroom activities.  Here's a fabulous webpage from Kathy Adkins, Technology Specialist, Forsyth County, GA schools system.

Create A Graph  This is another terrific site.   You type in your data, make graph choices, click and presto - there's your colorful graph(s).  It couldn't be easier!

Jellybean Graphs   and   Coin Graphs   Last year we sorted jellybeans and coins.  Both of these projects have student-written questions to use as lesson extensions:
