Fall Book:  It’s Fall by Linda Glaser

We enjoyed listening to many seasonal stories during our unit on fall.  One we especially liked was It's Fall by Linda Glaser.  After listening to the story, we brainstormed a list of ideas and words that reminded us of the season of fall.  Using these ideas, we wrote a five senses poem about fall.

Fall

Fall
looks like falling leaves
Coming off maple trees.
Flying, flipping, and floating down.

Red
!  Orange!  Yellow!  Brown!

Fall
sounds like geese flying south for the winter.
A gather of geese in the shape of a V.
Heading for a warmer place to be.
Honk, honk!  Honk, honk!

Fall
tastes like fresh, juicy, just-picked Macintosh apples.
That Mom bakes into a warm apple pie.
Sweet!  Crispy!  My, oh, my!

Fall
feels like a blowing breeze.
Blowing on us and on trees.
Time to dress in sweaters and coats.
Cold!  Shiver!  Chilly!  Brrr!

Fall
smells like a roasting turkey on Thanksgiving.
Grandma adds melted butter, juices, and spice.
Puts it in the oven to cook it nice.
Sniff, sniff!  Sniff, sniff!

Fall is here!  We love it!

~by Mr. White's First Grade

We used the remaining ideas to write sentences and illustrate pictures of our favorite fall activities.  Here are two samples:

I love fall because I like jack-o-lanterns.
~ Mikayla

I love fall because I love jumping in leaves.
~ Tyler

Our published poem and fall sentences are displayed on our hallway bulletin board for others to enjoy.  We made fall coffee filter leaves for our tree by using watered-down tempera paint.
