Our
class had a wonderful time with this project. Fall in our part of
Canada is a wonderful season full of colour. It was easy for us to
decide that our poem should be about those colours. After we wrote
the poem, the children then painted pictures using one or all the of
the colours they associate with fall.

The Colours of Fall
Fall is red.
Leaves turn red.
Sunsets are red.
Apples are red.
Cheeks get red.
Fall is orange.
Leaves turn orange.
Pumpkins are orange.
Jack-o-lanterns are orange.
Carrots are orange.
Fall is yellow.
Leaves turn yellow.
The sun is yellow.
Grass turns yellow.
Corn is yellow.
Fall is brown.
Leaves turn brown.
Acorns are brown.
Roast turkey is brown.
Hibernating bears are brown.
Fall is colourful.
Fall is here.
We love it!

It was hard for us to pick our favorite fall book but we finally
decided on Pumpkin Day, Pumpkin Night by Anne Rockwell.
Everyone could identify with the little boy in the story as he
searched for his favorite pumpkin. We read in at
Halloween so naturally everyone had their own story about picking
their pumpkins.

This project covered many areas of the Grade One Curriculum. In
Language Arts, it satisfied the following expectations. The
students will:
1. read a variety of simple written materials (e.g., signs,
pattern books,
rhymes, children's reference books) for different purposes
2. communicate ideas (thoughts, feelings, experiences) for
specific
purposes
3. organize information so that the writing conveys a clear
message.
In Science it covered expectations in the Earth and Space
Systems (Daily and Seasonal Cycles) strand. Students will:
1. demonstrate an understanding of changes that occur in daily
and
seasonal cycles
2. compare the different characteristics of the four seasons.
In Visual Arts it covered the following expectations.
Students will:
1. produce two- and three-dimensional works of art that
communicate ideas (thoughts, feelings, experiences) for specific
purposes;
2. use the elements of design (colour, line, shape, form, space,
texture,
in ways appropriate for this grade, when producing and responding
to
works of art.
