Fall Book:  When Autumn Comes by Robert Mass

In Southern California we really don’t get the fall changes that other parts of the country get. However, through books, poetry, art activities and some cooking, our class experienced fall.

Our class read many books about fall. Our favorite was When Autumn Comes by Robert Mass. It gave us good descriptions of changes that happen all around us in the fall.

To capture the color of fall we did a tear art project called torn trees, we used fall colors and tore pieces of construction paper to use for the leaves of the trees.

We did an acrostic poem as a class, and each child wrote their own acrostic poem. Here is our class poem:

Fall is good.
Apples are picked.
Leaves fall.
Leaves turn color.

Fall is here!  We love it!

Each child brought in their favorite colored apple, we graphed the colors, then we cut the apples and tasted them, then we graphed our favorite tasting apple. We did real and representational graphs and finally we made applesauce with our apples.

This is the recipe we used for applesauce:

Sliced apples and water to just cover the apples, ½ cup of sugar and cinnamon to taste. Cook in a slow cooker all day long. Stir occasionally, and serve during a fall movie such as Winnie the Pooh’s Blustery Day.
