Fall Book:  Autumn Leaves by Ken Robbins

This book generated a lot of discussion on the types of trees we have in our area of New England.  We read several other books which  focused on  the types of trees in our immediate area and how we could identify their leaves and seeds.

We have large maple trees and oaks around our school.   We also have evergreen trees.
As a homework assignment,  I asked the students to bring in samples of deciduous leaves (only maple, oak or sassafras).  I also asked them to find seeds to the maple and oak.

The class also discussed the evergreen trees. We decided to include some samples of evergreens in our book.  Our class took a nature walk around the school and discussed these two categories of trees.

They also wrote individual poems which can be viewed by visiting our web site.

  Our Class Poem

We Love New England in the Fall!!

Red, green, and yellow apples hang low
Waiting for the wind to blow.

There are rainbow colored leaves all around.
They make a colorful blanket on the ground.

We search for the perfect pumpkin in the field.
Pumpkins grow on vines, so we have to kneel.

As we take a walk through the pumpkin patch
We try to find a pair of pumpkins that match.

Our New England weather is cooler in the fall.
We put on our jackets to go play ball.

We love New England in the fall!!

The state standards our class project reflects are as follows:

Writing:  Students will engage in a process of generating ideas, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing or presenting.

Science:  Children will raise questions about their surroundings and seek answers by making careful observations.  They will also discuss their findings.  Know what season exist in New England and identify some of the seasonal changes
