Fall Books:  Pumpkin Day, Pumpkin Night by Anne Rockwell

We made a great bulletin board for parent teacher conferences after reading this text.  We discussed how a carved pumpkin is called a jack-o-lantern and how pumpkins, just like people, are all different shapes and sizes. I then asked each child what size pumpkin they would like to have and I drew their preference.  The children painted them orange and added glowing yellow faces. I outlined them with thick black 'pumpkin lines' so that the children could cut them out easily afterward.  They were very proud of their jack-o-lanterns.  In retrospect, I would've put the words, "Pumpkin Day, Pumpkin Night" next time.

Our class poem was composed using shared writing with my kindergarten students.  We wrote several, but here is our best:

It's cold
Feel the wind blow
BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Fall is here I love it !

Here is an activity that worked successfully in my kindergarten classroom:
After reading, Fall is Here! I love It!
with the students chiming in chorally on the refrain, I asked each student what they love to do in the fall.  Using large chart paper, I wrote down each students response emphasizing the characteristics, phonemes, and spaces in print as I scripted their answers for them to see.  The following day, I presented students with their sentence, which I had typed and attached to large manila paper with the phrase "Fall is here. I love it!' at the bottom.  After reading each page to the children, they illustrated their page and practiced reading the words to themselves by matching their reading finger to the text.

We bound the pages together and had a wonderful experience chiming in together to read!  Now we have another fine addition to our reading center.
