Books:  Fresh Fall Leaves by Betsy Franco,
Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant
Autumn: An Alphabet Acrostic by Steven Schnur

We read many books about what happens to plants and animals in the fall. Our class poem is an acrostic, just like Steven Schnur's book!

Autumn Acrostic

Apples are good
Under a tree, colored leaves
Trick-or-treat on Halloween
Up in the air, cooler weather
Mothers bake and cook on Thanksgiving
Nuts are gathered...

Fall Is Here! We Love It!

Since we live in Florida, we don't see many leaves change color, but some of our relatives who live in other places mailed some autumn leaves to us!

We shared these colorful signs of fall with our whole class by adding the leaves to our bulletin board display.

One of the best parts of first grade is drawing and writing class books, so we made a book called Fall Is Best to share our favorite fall experiences. This photo shows a page from the book. Brandon loves jumping in leaves!

Our class ended our unit on Autumn with a trip to a farm. We sang songs with the farmer, heard a story from the farmer's wife, and visited with so many animals!

When we came back to class, we created scarecrows and wrote a story about them. We are so happy that fall is here -- we really do love it!

The state standards addressed by our unit were:

Listens for a variety of informational purposes; uses available technology to increase listening

Identifies and uses repetition, rhyme, and rythym in oral and written text

Uses personal perspective in responding to a work of literature
Knows that plants and animals are dependent on each other for survival

Recognizes patterns in weather and seasons
