After reading the book Why Do Leaves Change
Color? by Betsy
Maestro, and discussing signs of fall in Shelton, our class took
a nature walk and picked out some green leaves. We observed the
leaves and predicted what colors they would become. Using a
paper chromotography experiment, we were able to see those
colors! After a couple of weeks, we checked the same tree where
our leaves came from and we were correct! We created pictures
to show the difference of leaf colors in the summer and fall.

The students decided to write an acrostic poem about their
favorite part of fall, Halloween:
|
Halloween
is picking pumpkins and eating candy
All
kids love trick-or-treating
Leaves
fall on Halloween night
Lots
of candy in our bags
On
Halloween people dress up
Wicked
witches scare us
Everybody
loves carving pumpkins
Every
costume is scary
Now
we know it's fall and we love it!

Our favorite Halloween story is
The Ghost's
Dinner by Jaques
Duquennoy. After creating our poem, we used our listening
skills to create jack-o-lantern glyphs.

You can see some examples of
individual fall sensory
poems on our website.
