Books:  Autumn Days by Ann Schweninger
Apple Picking Time
by Michele Ilawson
Bring In The Pumpkins by Dahlov Ipcar
Why Do Leaves Change Color? by Betsy Maestro

We have been reading several books and poems about autumn. They have inspired the class to participate in several writing activities.

Autumn Days by Ann Schweninger is a book about signs of autumn.  Apple Picking Time by Michele Ilawson tells about some fall activities.   The class created a poem about this season.  First we did a word study of letter patterns and rhyming words.  Then we thought about fall signs and activities and used some of the rhyming words in the lines of the poem.

Time For Fall

It is time for fall.
Come and play football.
The days get small.
We go school shopping at the mall.

The leaves blow around.
They fall on the ground,
In a big mound,
Quietly, without a sound.

We pick apples off the tree.
Watch out for the bee!
Go pumpkin picking, just dad and me.
How many pumpkins do you see?

Yankees get your mitt.
Yankees get a hit.
Yankees don't quit.
Fall is here.  WE LOVE IT!

We read the story, Bring In The Pumpkins by Dahlov Ipcar.  We went pumpkin picking. Each student created a pumpkin character and wrote a story about the character.

As part of our unit on Interactions in science, we read the book Why Do Leaves Change Color? by Betsy Maestro.  We also read two poems about fall leaves by Teddy Slater- Autumn Morning and Red

Each student created a poem based on one of the colors of changing leaves.  Here is one of the poems:

Orange
by Diego

Orange as a pumpkin
Orange as a cat
Orange as the a.m.
Orange as a rat
Orange as a crayon
Orange as a mat
Orange as
the leaves
That fall from the trees
On a cool fall day.
