Dear Fellow Students,

Here in Jackson, NJ, we had a great time creating poetry about our fall season. We hope you enjoy the poem we have written and learn from the ones we studied. We've already started thinking about our next project! We can't wait till winter!

Sincerely,
The fabulous fourth graders of
Mrs. McKee's Class at Switlik Elementary School

Our Class Poem:

Fall is Here! We Love It!
In the fall we see red and orange leaves
Also, we feel cold weather.
A bird, traveling south for the winter,
Flew past my house and lost its feather
In the fall we taste stuffing, turkey, and pie
When we cook them, we wear our oven mitts.
Breezes! Football! Halloween! Hunting!
Oh, fall is here! We Love it!

Selected Poems to Read

Scary Costume
by Robert Pottle

With an evil eye that stares you down
and a bulbous warty nose,
a furrowed brow, a nasty scowl,
and old outdated clothes,
my costume is the scariest
the world has ever seen.
I'm not an ogre, ghost, or ghoul:
I'm a teacher for Halloween.

Autumn (Resignation)
By Humbert Wolfe in 1926

Listen! the wind is rising,
and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings,
now for October eves!

Leaves
October leaves are lovely
They rustle when I run
Sometimes I make a heap
And jump in them for fun.

September
by  John Updike

The breezes taste
     Of apple peel.
The air is full
     Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
     Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
     Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
     Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
     Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
     With suds, the days
Are polished with
     A morning haze.

Fall Haiku
Christopher Jones

Maple leaves dangle.
Morning sun through the window.
My eyes are heavy.
