Our favourite fall book this year was Fall Is Not Easy by Marty Kelly.  It is a story of a tree who likes spring, summer and winter but in the fall he just cannot seem to get his leaves to change colour appropriately.  They become everything from hamburgers to cows to pumpkins before they all fall to the ground.  The children did an art project and designed their own ideas of what the leaves may look like.

We decided to write a Senses poem this year as it is part of our Science curriculum.  After we had written the poem, the students had a chance to illustrate it. There were lots of suggestions as to what we can see, hear, smell, feel, and taste in the fall.  Here is our final product.

FALL

We see leaves changing colour.
We
hear Canada geese honking.
We
smell candles burning in jack-o-lanterns.
We
feel mushy pumpkin goo.
We
taste pumpkin pie.

This project covered many areas of the Grade One Curriculum.  In Language Arts, it satisfied the following expectations.  The students will:
1.    read a variety of simple written materials (e.g., signs, pattern books, rhymes, children's reference books) for different purposes
 2.    communicate ideas (thoughts, feelings, experiences) for specific purposes
3.    organize information so that the writing conveys a clear message.

In Science it covered expectations in the Earth and Space Systems (Daily and Seasonal Cycles) strand and Life Systems (Characteristics and Needs of Living Things) strand.  Students will:
1.    demonstrate an understanding of changes that occur in daily and seasonal cycles
2.    compare the different characteristics of the four seasons.
3.      identify the location and function of each sense organ.

In Visual Arts it covered the following expectations.  Students will:
 1.    produce two- and three-dimensional works of art that communicate ideas (thoughts, feelings, experiences) for specific purposes;
2.    use the elements of design (colour, line, shape, form, space, texture,in ways  appropriate for this grade, when producing and responding to works of art.
