Mrs. McGowan's Class

H. W. Mountz School Spring Lake, NJ    Spring 2005

We  visited a local museum recently to see a robotic dinosaur exhibit.  It was a very interesting morning and we learned some new things about dinosaurs.  Did you know that dinosaurs  may be the ancestors of birds?  Did you know that flying reptiles were not dinosaurs? In second grade, students will learn even more about these fascinating animals!

On this page, we are sharing a fun writing project.  Students pretended to have a dinosaur friend.  They gave their pal a name (very much like their own), wrote  a describing paragraph, created a title using Word Art, and illustrated their writing.

To start, we brainstormed possible ideas and words to use.  Then each student created a plan for their writing using a graphic organizer like this example:

After a first draft (sloppy copy) was written, revised and edited during student/teacher conference, their titles were created in Word Art.  A final copy was handwritten and illustrated.
