Colorful Spring!
A Collaborative Internet Literacy Project   Spring 2005

  Mrs. Singsank's Second Grade
St. Mary School
Buffalo Grove, Illinois

We read fiction and nonfiction books, about spring, Easter, April Fool, Earth Day, and the Rain Forest.  We've worked on several art projects like weaving kites, making ducks with umbrellas standing in rain puddles, and doing crayon resist flower blossoms.

We hope that our readers will enjoy our class poem.  We spent three days journal writing about spring.  We created three different poems.

We began by talking about the internet project and by sharing some of the class poems that other participating classes wrote for the COLORFUL SPRING project. Our first poem was called Springtime in Illinois (You'll know it's springtime in Illinois when…).

For our second poem, we wrote about what we see, hear, taste, smell, touch, and feel (happy, excited) in spring.  Our third poem was an acrostic poem using the letters in SPRINGTIME.  Each day we shared our writing with our classmates.  We then took ideas from all the poems and put them together to create our class poem for this project. We had a lot of fun writing and sharing our poetry.

Springtime in Illinois

Springtime Brings WEATHER CHANGES!

During March, April, May
Snow in the beginning or even for April Fools
Days are longer, sometimes windy, mostly sunny
Wind blows in our faces and pushes us backwards
Cool breezes blow through our windows
Rainy season brings downpours and drizzles
Put up umbrellas or let raindrops fall on your head
After the rain, you may see bright rainbows in the sky
The sun plays hide and seek behind the clouds
Green is the color of spring

Springtime brings BEAUTY after a white winter world!

Springtime is a TIME OF WONDER!

Amazing things happening
April Showers really do bring May Flowers
Wild flowers blooming in the meadow
Dandelions in the grass
Leaves spreading on the trees
Apples start out as blossoms
Planting season in Illinois fields and gardens
Animals come out of hibernation
Tadpoles turn into frogs
Frogs croaking in the pond
Ducks and geese parade
Fish plopping in the ponds
Buzzing bees coming out of hives
Robins return and find their worms
Tweeting birds building nests
Baby birds hatch from eggs
Bunnies bouncing around
Squirrels climbing trees and wires
Caterpillars become colorful butterflies
Fresh air to breathe
The world comes to life

GOD CREATED SPRING!

Springtime brings times of CELEBRATION!

Easter eggs are painted
Chocolate eggs and jelly beans to eat
Jesus rises
Easter in March, Passover in April
April Fools' jokes
Whoopee cushions
First Communion in Grade Two
Earth needs you
Earth Day reminds us to keep the Earth clean
Sharing and caring in the neighborhood
May Day baskets of flowers
Special day to serve your mother too

Springtime brings JOY!

Springtime is a time of incredible FUN!

No sitting inside…everybody's out
Gardeners are getting busy
Parks and Zoos await visitors
Time to go fishing, share a picnic, go strawberry picking
Running, Walking
Adults' feet pound as they take their morning run
Babies out in strollers, Dogs on leashes
Shorts pulled out of drawers
The Ice Cream man returns
School's almost out
Baseball season starts for the Cubs and White Sox
Baseball practice for Little League begins
TV off…Kids outside playing games like Hide and Seek, shouting really loud
Bikes down from the garage hooks, air pumped into tires, ready for a spin
Kite flying, jump roping, horseback riding, rollerblading and roller skating
Ready, set, go!  The race is on!
Nothing will get in our way of having FUN!
