Our
school has a Reading Courtyard. We are very lucky that our classroom is
one that has a door that opens directly into the courtyard. We went
outside to see what kinds of flowers and trees were planted in our
courtyard. We watched from the window each day for the first signs of
the colors of spring to bloom. The first day that we noticed the
Aristocrat Pear tree in bloom, we took our self selected reading outside
to enjoy the warm air, gentle breeze, and beautiful blossoms of the tree
overhead. We learned so much about the pear tree and how the pollen
from the blooms sticks to the legs of bees. They carry the pollen to
other blossoms and help to pollinate the flowers. We later have fruits,
vegetables, and other pretty flowers because the bees help us as they
drink the nectar from the blossoms. We took pictures of us enjoying our
books under the blooming tree.

We enjoyed the breeze so much and seeing the blossoms fall in our
hair that it inspired our class poem:
An Acrostic Poem About Spring Awakening
in Our Reading Courtyard
Sunshine
