Colorful Spring!
A Collaborative Internet Literacy Project   Spring 2005

Mrs. Eileen McKee's Fourth Grade
Switlik Elementary School
Jackson, New Jersey

Some of the spring poems we read:
The Kite (a modern nursery rhyme)
A spring haiku about a silver trout (author unknown)
I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
In Time of Silver Rain and
    April Rain Song
by Langston Hughes
To A Red Kite by Lilian Moore

Prior to composing our spring poem, our class learned about the various forms of poetry. We then read and discussed poems relating to spring and spring colors. We brainstormed ideas and then the students recorded the results. Together, the class decided which lines to include and then joined them, creating our class poem. We really had a great time!

Spring Is Here

I'll tell colors of a spring day
No black, brown, or gray.
There's blue, yellow, pink, and red
The flowers are there while you lie in bed.

Now in spring it's time to play.
Sports are here, scream hooray!
Sports are coming out just like tennis
So are vegetables like green lettuce.

A bluebird waves her wing
As if to say to sing.
Follow her flight
To watch the yellow sun so bright.

Here are the yellow daffodils
coming out to play
As the white winter snow is melting away.
I see rainbow trout jumping in the lake
Now it is time to go on spring break!
