We enjoyed these spring books so far:

That's What Happens When It's Spring! by Elaine Good
Mrs. Toggle's Beautiful Blue Shoe by Robin Pulver
Simon Welcomes Spring by Gilles Tibo
Turtle Spring by Deborah Zagwyn

The day we wrote our poems it was 42 °, cloudy, gray, windy and rainy - a nice spring (winter?) day in NJ! Despite the weather, crocuses and daffodils had been coming up and we were getting ready for Easter and spring vacations.

Prewriting started with a class discussion about signs of spring and spring vocabulary. All the students' ideas were listed on a chart. The next day we wrote a class poem.  Words were suggested and changed. We tried other ways to end the poem and finally settled on We love spring!

Our Colorful Spring Poem

Brown and white
Bunnies
Hopping on the grass
We love spring!

Collaborative writing is very motivating to new writers.  It's essential for students to see and participate in the modeling of writing a draft (sloppy copy) and rereading for revision.  Much rereading takes place to "hear how it reads."  Changes are easily made and then changed again.  I like to cross out rather than erase.  My fast writing usually leads to spelling mistakes but we keep on going.   Spelling is fixed at the end.

After writing this simple poem together, we each wrote our own.  Most of our individual poems have this format:

Line 1:  adjectives (color)
Line 2:  noun related to spring
Lines 3 - 4:  action word (s)
Line 4:  feeling about spring

Spring Tulips

Pink and blue and yellow tulips
Blowing in the wind,
I love spring!

 by Emma

We continued writing about spring  on return from a week's vacation.  This time we focused on the use of more descriptive words.  Here's Emma's second version of the same poem, revised.

Beautiful pink and blue and yellow tulips
Blowing in the wind,
Make me feel happy,
I love spring!
