We began this study by watching the video
version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (based
on story by Roald Dahl) for about a
week during our afternoon snack time. Everyone could
hardly wait for the next "installment"! Some
students had seen the new version this summer and thought it
was a little scary.
Several books
were also used as read alouds. The Chocolate Train
by
Joanne Kornfeld
was a favorite and
inspired the class to create their own "chocolate lands"
such as Bridget's Candy Playground:

Then we took a class survey of our
favorite kind of chocolate and another one at home for one
family member. The data was recorded with tally marks
in the classroom for both surveys and used to make
traditional bar graphs. We found just a little
difference between the student and adult choices.
These graphs show student choices:

Finally, using
Graph Club software, the chocolate surveys were made
into computer graphs to show another view. During the
year, we will all learn how to make computer graphs.

Now
we are listening to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
being read aloud. Everyone thinks it was good to
see the video first. With a little more computer
experience, we'll be ready for some of the interesting
online activities listed on the
resource page.
We will be revisiting this yummy topic of chocolate all
year long! Did you know that Snowman Soup is made
with hot chocolate? Here's a great winter recipe:
|
Into a hot cup or
snowman mug, put
* 1 package hot chocolate mix,
* A few candy kisses,
* Some mini marshmallows,
* A candy cane |
Maybe we'll write about chocolate bunnies and chicks in
the spring!
