~  We Love Fall ~
An Introduction to the Writing Process

Sharing what we know about fall is a comfortable way for emerging writers to begin learning about the writing process.  It certainly is a topic they know lots about!

Step I:  Sharing Ideas (prewriting/brainstorming)

We begin this project with a class period devoted to brainstorming words about the season.  Then these words are grouped into a few categories such as fall sports, colors, foods, etc.  The words are written on our chalkboard and provide models for making our writing plan or story map.  Here is a typical plan:

Step II:  Sloppy Copy (first draft)

Most of the children are writing one or two words or a short sentence.  They add this writing to a drawing made about one of the topics they selected for their project.  Drawings are first done in pencil so that changes can be made in the next steps.  Sharing their work with friends gives important feedback for the writer.

Step III and IV:  Let's Make It Better! (revising/editing)

At our beginning stage of writing,  I combine the revising/editing process steps.  During a student/teacher conference, we discuss the drawing and any writing that's been done.  I really enjoy this opportunity to learn more about what the children are thinking as they share their creations. Since this work is being published (displayed in corridor and used on website), the spelling needs to be done correctly.  Sticky notes are very handy here.  Back to work now!

Step V:  Final Copy

Student work is ready to share!  Each child makes a booklet and includes one page per topic listed on the plan.  Some select to make two pages on one topic.  Covers are made and decorated.  Pages and plan are inserted. Our first project is complete!  Please go to the page below to see some of our work.
