Help Each Other
As we begin the new school year, developing classroom community is important.  All the children want to have friends and be with people they are comfortable with.  Equally important is learning how to be a friend. Several activities are devoted to learning about friendship in September and this concept is continuously reinforced during the year.  Many stories relating to friendship will be shared.  We'll be using some of these titles:

Our first "friendship" lesson began with noticing different things students have already done to help a classmate: sharing jobs (door holders, messengers), finding a partner's book page if they were out of the room, sharing a snack, reminding nicely about what's happening next or where to put something.

Next, each of us told the class other things they could do to help a friend.  Then we made drawings and Mrs. M. wrote what we said  was happening in our pictures.   Take a look at some of our drawings on this page:
